At first glance it looks a bit strange, but if you think about it it’s a great idea.
I am sure that they would be needing to carry all sorts of things from the boat to the house. Since they live on an island and tend the Light House I would imagine that they buy everything in large quantities. A car makes the transport of large quantities much easier and I can’t imagine that the weather is always nice and clear like it is in the picture. I am guessing that it rains on occasion and maybe even snows.
